Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, hours will vary between 5:30 am - 7:30 pm.DUTIES: The Staff Nurse is a professional nurse at an intermediate level of development. As progression is made in the nursing profession, it is expected that leadership skills and competencies will be sustained with expertise and a broad-based clinical knowledge to effectively implement health promotion, management of acute and chronic illness, and care of the dying. The nurse is obligated to ongoing, comprehensive evaluation and improvement of clinical practice and health care delivery systems to meet the needs of patients in the Day Procedure Program (DPP)/Post Anesthesia Unit (PACU). The Staff Nurse in the DPP/PACU Clinic demonstrates leadership in delivering critical care and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. Demonstrates and maintains critical care and clinic core and unit specific competencies. Plans, implements, and evaluates outpatient clinic nursing care using VA and community standards for patients in the DPP unit by contributing to comprehensive assessments and care plan. Administers medications appropriately, following the 5 "R's" of medication administration and established facility and service policies and procedures. The incumbent is knowledgeable of the expected therapeutic results (and possible side effects) of medications administered, as well as medication administration issues for adult and elderly patients in a critical care unit PACU. Educates patients regarding medications, therapeutic uses, possible side effects, etc. The nurse is responsible safety and infection control practices on the unit, working with the nurse manager to ensure compliance with regulations. The nurse is responsible for assessment and documentation of assessment for various surgical clinic patients, and for the completion of clinical reminders. Additionally the nurse will be responsible for critical assessments in the Post Anesthesia Recovery Room using critical care knowledge and skills for both phase I and phase II recovery patients. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required in specific specialty areas. The nurse will cross-train to support procedural areas, to include, but not limited to radiology, Cardiac Nuclear Medicine, Pain Procedures, Dental and GI lab. Must successfully complete critical care course or successfully test out.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of Critical Care/PACU experienceFunctional Statement: Nurse I-IIIBasic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations:The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. BSN and approximately 2-3 years of experience; or2. MSN and approximately 1-2 years of experience; Masters in a field related to nursing and a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or3. Doctoral degree in nursing, or in a field related to nursing and no experience.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
